Vassell had a successful basketball career that spanned various roles in the sport. He began his journey in college basketball at Brandon University, where he achieved notable milestones such as being named the CIS Player of The Year in 1995 and the CIS Rookie of the Year in 1991. Throughout his college career, he received recognition as a three-time CIS All-Canadian from 1993 to 1996 and a five-time GPAC conference 1st Team All-Star from 1991 to 1996. In 1996, he led his school to victory in the CIS championship and earned the title of tournament MVP.

Transitioning to his club career, Vassell started professionally in Spain with Viña Costeira before moving to KR in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild karla in January 1998. He spent four and a half successful seasons with KR, winning the national championship in 2000. Over the years, he played for various teams in different leagues, showcasing his talent and contributing to their success.

Vassell also made significant contributions to the Canadian national basketball teams during his 11-year tenure. His coaching career began with stints at KR and later Fjölnir, where he achieved success with both men's and women's teams. He went on to coach at his alma mater, Brandon University, and later took on coaching roles at Niagara College Knights and eventually as the head coach of London Lightning, guiding them to an NBL championship in 2018.

Throughout his coaching career, Vassell displayed his leadership and coaching abilities, leaving a mark on the teams he worked with. His dedication to the sport and his continuous pursuit of excellence have solidified his place in the basketball community as a player, coach, and mentor.
